 The
Talyllyn is a coal fired steam operated narrow gauge railway, opened in
1866 to transport slate from Bryn Eglwys quarry to the Cambrian Railway at
Tywyn.
In 1951, the line was taken over by the Talyllyn Railway Preservation
Society, the first Railway Preservation Society in the world, who have
maintained and operated the line ever since.
The main station, Tywyn Wharf, is situated at Tywyn, Gwynedd, on the
Cambrian Coast (on the A493 Dolgellau to Machynlleth road). The line runs
7¼ miles inland through the Snowdonia National Park. The last station
with road access is Abergynolwyn (Road B4405) and the line continues to
Nant Gwernol terminus, which has footpath access only.
Talyllyn Railway Facilities
Tywyn Wharf Station has a large car park with
free parking for coaches 100 yards from the station.
The Station has modem toilets with disabled and nappy change rooms. The
Railway Shop stocks a large range of Souvenirs, books and specialist
railway and model railway items.
In the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum well maintained exhibits of every
aspect of narrow gauge equipment from locomotives to signals is
complemented by a visual display of slate quarrying development and
transport.
The Station Refreshment room provides a wide range of hot and cold snacks,
sandwiches and drinks.
At Abergynolwyn station coach parking is also
free. Coaches may reverse up the station approach to the platform or park
in the lay-by at road level.
Modem toilets have disabled and nappy change facilities.
The station shop and refreshment room provide a service similar to Wharf
station. In addition to which a tea room, opened in 1999, allows us to
provide your party with light refreshments (tea/coffee and biscuits) on
arrival at a cost of £1.00 per head. If you require this new service
please let us know when booking so that the appropriate arrangements
Group Rates and Bookings
Any party consisting of 15 or more fare paying passengers is entitled to
group rates.
One person must make the booking and payment for the whole group and they
will be issued with a group travel ticket which is also a receipt. Where
required seat regulation tickets, which do not show a fare, will also be
issued for each member of the party, to an organiser, driver or courier
who wishes to sell them on.
Reserved accommodation will be provided for all bookings made up to 24
hours before travel. Groups are asked to travel together in the seats
reserved for them.
Bookings can be made in person at Wharf station, by fax, letter or
telephone. All bookings will be confirmed by us in writing.
Payment can be made any time up to thirty minutes before train departure
time by cash, cheque or credit card. Credit accounts are subject to prior
arrangement
We are always happy to discuss the provision of charter trains and evening
excursions. For weddings, anniversaries and other special occasions we can
combine train and catering services in a package deal.
If, on the day of your visit you are running late for any reason and feel
that you may miss your train, give us a ring on 01654 710472 as soon as
you can. As far as the service allows we will do our best to transfer your
booking to a later train or suggest alterations to your route which will
help you catch the train at a different station. In any case we will help
all we can.
